A depth map is a grayscale image that encodes the distance from the camera to objects in a scene. Each pixel’s brightness corresponds to depth: lighter values typically represent closer surfaces and darker values represent farther ones (or vice versa, depending on convention). Depth maps do not contain color or texture information—only per-pixel distance data.
